There are many words of advice that I give in my clinical practice as I guide my patients towards better health. Something that comes up often is water. This is one of the simplest yet most neglected areas of overall health. Regardless of the condition or complaint, I often tell my patients to drink enough water so that your pee is a pale-yellow color. It’s not rocket science but this simple rule of thumb can give you a guide to help stay hydrated throughout life.

You see, we are water. Our bodies overall contain an average of 60 percent water. Water fills up our cells. Water lubricates our joints. Water cushions our brains and protects our unborn children in the womb. Water keeps us beautiful! Hydrated skin is fuller and suppler.

And let’s not forget, water is important for my favorite pastime, eating. Without saliva, which is 98 percent water, our food would never make it past our mouth and we wouldn’t even be able to taste it. We can live without food for weeks but without water, most humans will die within 3-4 days. As an ER physician, I have seen firsthand how a simple bag of saline (a sterile mixture of salt and water) can make a person come to life like a freshly watered plant.

As my patients, family and friends know, I like to keep things simple. So, bringing it back to basics…water is life. Drink enough until your pee is a pale-yellow color. The following are a few tips that I use daily to achieve this goal.

Five tricks that I use to “pee pale yellow”

  1. I start my morning with a glass of fresh lemon water. This has become a part of my morning ritual which is one of the favorite parts of my day. With this simple ritual, I start the day fully hydrated and energized.
  2. I limit myself to two cups of coffee or less (most of the time). Caffeine is a natural diuretic which means it dehydrates you or makes you lose water from your body. For this and many other reasons I try to limit my caffeine intake. Not only does this help me stay hydrated, it prevents anxiety, restlessness and insomnia that normally comes with too much caffeine throughout the day.
  3. I always carry a water bottle or have a glass of water on my desk throughout the day. I prioritize this habit and don’t let a busy life get in the way of simple hydration. I find that a stainless-steel water bottle is the best. It is easy to clean and doesn’t retain any smell. My family loves to decorate their water bottles with stickers, making it even more fun to stay hydrated.
  4. I drink herbal tea throughout the day. I enjoy various types of tea, some loose, some in simple tea bags. In the winter, I choose hot tea and in the summer my entire family loves iced tea.
  5. I make water fun by adding flavors to sparkling water. Often while I’m preparing dinner, I make it festive by combining sparkling water with a small amount of 100% fruit juice or mint sprigs. Fresh grapefruit juice is delicious!
